Is it worth your time?

Hello everyone,

This is my first short-form post (well, almost short-form). I hope to use this feature as a way of engaging with fellow writers and learning more about their writing journeys. Today’s post briefly discusses Vocal. Have you written on the platform and if so what has been your experience? If you haven’t written anything on the platform I am curious to know why too.

I recently started writing on vocal (well, I use that term loosely as I have just posted some of my old Medium stories on the platform) to test it out. This is after reading multiple articles about how great the platform is. A few top writers on Medium have also gone out of their way to promote Vocal.

I have been on the platform just a little over a week now and I am not sure the platform is for me. Vocal runs quite a few writing challenges and that is how writers tend to make their money. However, the challenges are largely focused on fictional short stories, a genre that I don’t write. The challenges are also entered by thousands of people and so I have seen many people query how fair the judging process is, some have argued that popular writers are constantly picked as winners because of their popularity rather than the quality of their work.

Well, I haven’t entered any challenges but my experience on Vocal has been underwhelming. The site just seems like a low-budget Medium and I haven’t been able to engage with many readers and writers alike. This has led me to believe that the platform isn’t for me. I am better off putting more energy on Medium than Vocal. Also, I have made a whopping US$ 0.02 on Vocal — not great I know.
